How booking actually works here

There is no central reservations desk for the valley, and that trips people up. In practice:

• In the village, cottages are community and mission accommodation — you arrange them locally, through the mission office or the person who holds the keys, rather than online.
• At Heuningvlei, the community lodge and homestays are usually booked as part of the donkey cart trail through the Cederberg Heritage Route, or directly with Heuningvlei community tourism. Meals are cooked by the women of the community; the lodge itself is self-catering and sleeps sixteen.
• On the road in — Traveller's Rest, Enjo Nature Farm and the Biedouw farms — you book directly with the farm, and these have their own websites and normal booking.
• Clanwilliam is the fallback base if the valley is full, which in August it will be.

Assume self-catering unless you are told otherwise, ask specifically about bedding, hot water, power and firewood, and assume cash. Published contact numbers for the Heuningvlei side are on the donkey cart trail section — confirm them before you rely on them.

What to expect

This is rural, off-the-beaten-track staying — cottages and campsites rather than hotels, with simple, honest comfort. Book ahead in flower season (roughly August), when the Biedouw Valley fills up, and at Easter and Christmas, when the village fills with its own families. Bring supplies: the nearest shops and fuel are back in Clanwilliam.
