For a few weeks each spring, the veld on the road in turns to Namaqualand daisies — orange, white and gold, best of all in the Biedouw Valley.

When exactly should you come?
There's no fixed date. The bloom follows the winter rain, so a good year and a lean one can peak weeks apart. As a rule of thumb the display builds through August and can run from late July into early September. If you can, keep your dates loose and check locally in the week before you travel — Clanwilliam's tourism office and the seasonal flower reports track it each year.
Where are the best flowers?
The Biedouw Valley is the standout — a side valley off the road between Clanwilliam and Wupperthal, where the ground fills with daisies after the rain. Because it sits between the mountain fynbos and the drier Karoo, the mix of species is unusually rich. The flowers open to face the sun, so a bright afternoon shows them at their best; an overcast morning can keep them shut.
The upper end of the Biedouw Valley reaches a river crossing that is often impassable through the wet winter and only opens up later, around October. In peak flower season you may need to come back the way you came rather than loop through — no bad thing, since it's a lovely road twice.
Making a trip of it
The flowers pair naturally with the village itself — the 1836 shoe factory, the rooibos co-op and the mission church are all a short drive on. Come for the bloom, stay for the quiet.
